I impulse bought the Series 6 the week it was released and now I'm not sure if it's really enough improvement over my Series 5 to warrant keeping. Since it came, I've been using the sleep tracking features and I like the Heart Rate measurements it takes throughout the night. Last night, I switched back to the Series 5 in preparation to ship the 6 back to Apple this weekend. However, while it recorded my sleep (and when I got up to check on my son), it didn't take any HR measurements while I was asleep.

Was this just a settings issue or does the only the Series 6 take the detailed HR measurements throughout the night? The six measures HR near continuously during sleep. I can't find any information on this from Apples website, other than mention that the 6 uses both the green LED and the infrared LED to monitor HR - whereas the 5 only has the green LED. I'm wondering if maybe the feature to monitor HR during sleep is only part of the 6 due to the updated sensor and perhaps better power efficiency?

Anyone with a 4 or 5 getting these readings?

Does your series 5 monitor your heart rate during the day? As far as I know you can either have heart rate monitoring on or off. If it’s on then it will monitor your heart rate whenever the watch is on, whether you are sleeping or awake.

You can go to the Watch Settings, then Privacy, then Health to check to see if heart rate monitoring is on.

If it is on and you get readings during the day, then I suspect the problem at night might be that your band is too loose so it’s unable to get readings.
