The Safari guided tour video seems to show that once the Smart Cover is folded back, it stays there on it's own...you can see it in the video from time 00:09 - 00:19.

Unless the guy has really long fingers, it seems that the Smart Cover is saying attached to the back of the iPad. Would be very cool if it works this was.
 
It's possible that the cover just doesn't bend inwards so it maintains its rigidity when folded backwards.
 
Man. That thing aint gonna' cut it for me. Im a little rough on my devices and will be buying a full case when they are availiable. Cant wait to hear of the paper clips and "stuff" that the magnet picks up.
