Hi, just switched to OS X and trying to find equivalents to all those little apps i'm used to. I rip all my dvd's to disk and I'm looking for a very simple movie catalog that allows the playing of files through an external player such as vlc or quicktime. All i require is to be able to have the DVD cover, title and release date shown in the catalog, which is linked to a file or files ready to play. Is there anything out there?

if your ripping to ts folders there is a media managment app for that which I forget the name of, if your using mp4 then iTunes with frontrow

Rip the movies with Handbrake, you can then add cover art, description, release date and all that stuff using MetaX and have everything be organized using itunes.

im not sure what you mean by "ripping". handbrake does ripping+compression altogether.
