My late-2013 15" rMBP shutoff abruptly earlier. When I tried to boot, the screen displayed the blinking "dead battery" indicator, which usually means that the battery is too drained to boot the computer. I thought this was strange, as I didn't see the typical low battery notification that the OS usually displays when you're about to run out. I plugged it in for ten minutes, booted it, and it now says the battery is at 68%.

My battery's cycle count is at 916, which is close to the 1000 CC threshold beyond which Apple considers the battery due for replacement. If it is the battery, I'm not surprised by the timing. I was just curious to see if anyone can attest to whether the symptoms I described are typical of a battery problem.

Yes, that sounds like a battery issue. Have you ran Apple Diagnostics? (I'm not sure how extensively it tests the battery.)

If you take it to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider, they can run a battery test on it to confirm.

Tried Apple Diagnostics. No issues found. Guess I'll just go to the Genius Bar and be prepared to drop the $$$ on a new battery.

Try the free app "Coconut battery" to get a better indication of the battery's condition.
But... it sounds as if it's at the end of it's useful life.

If I recall, the replacement should run $200, which includes both the battery and the labor to install it.

I remember seeing posts from others who had the battery replaced, and then got an additional "labor charge" slapped onto the bill -- even though it shouldn't have happened.

Best to reach a full understanding of what the charges will be before you put it into their hands.
