Does TimeMachine External HD Sleep When My M1 MacBook Sleeps?

I made the mistake of purchasing a regular HD instead of an SSD for a TimeMachine back-up. This is set-up in my bedroom. I swear I heard the external HD going off in the middle of the night. I do have the hard drive "sleep when possible" checked/on.

Any thoughts? I may just return the HD and search for an external SSD.
