Does Touch ID work better with firmer presses?

I noticed that Touch ID does not always work perfectly for me.. for example I will touch with a registered finger and it will fail, but then I will hit the power button to turn off the screen and then try again and it will work the second time around with barely moving my finger from where it was positioned for the first press.
Also, is it just me or does the reader actually work better when you give it a firmer press? Maybe it's just in my mind, but.. thoughts/comments? Thanks!
