In my line of work, I need to download about 30~50GB of files daily, and I'm thinking about getting an USB portable drive for both extra storage place and for saving the wear-and-tear on my SSD.

But it got me thinking, does an USB portable drive actually saves the SSD from working too much? Or does the file still goes through the SSD somehow and consumes its life during the process?

You can direct Safari, Chrome, Torrent Applications etc. to download to your Ext. HDD but note that if you run said applications without the drive attached, it may default back to the SSD because downloading is considered a crucial feature of the programs.

With that amount of data writes a Samsung 840 Pro will still have a life of 4 to 6 years minimum, possibly more. Do you expect to keep your machine that long? I would use the hardware you have and not worry about it.
