Sometimes i think about leaving my laptop on all night to download something but i'm unsure whether or not my battery will eventually stop working sooner if i leave it on when plugged in. Does the amount of time it spends switched on when plugged in have any effect on the battery? Will it make how long it lasts in a year from now less than it would be if i kept it on less whilst plugged in?

Yeah, it does run down maybe once or twice a week but what i'm asking is does having the laptop on longer, whilst plugged in, have any effect on the battery life?

My Sony AW290 has a battery utility that allow the user to control how much of the battery gets charged while plugged. I use it plugged up most of the time, so I have it set at 50%. It is supposed to preserve the long term life of the battery by not fully charging it. I don't know if OSX has a similar utility.
