You need a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter, like Apple's, plus a Thunderbolt cable. People do find it increasingly unreliable with newer versions of macOS, so if you don't already own the adapter and cable, it won't cost much more, if at all, to just get a regular display.I'm trying to find out if thats possible, searched on YT one guy claiming it does work. Can someone confirm this ?
Thanks I'll give it a go, do you know if imac will still work when used as display or it will shut itself down? From the videos i watched they say to hit command+f2 to switch to start using imac as display but none mention how to go back to normal mode, hitting command+f2 again ? I want my imac to work when used as display for other computer.Yes it should be possible. Just make sure that you're using a Thunderbolt cable (and at that, a Thunderbolt 2 cable only). In addition to the Apple TB2 to TB3 adapter. Sometimes people plug in a miniDisplayport cable and are frustrated it doesn't work when it needs to be a Thunderbolt cable (TB2 and miniDP are the same connector, but have different capabilities). And the Apple TB2 to TB3 has a female TB2 port and a male TB3 plug so the TB3 part has to go to the MBP with TB3 and then you plug the TB2 cable into the TB2 ports.
Thanks a lot! I'll give it a goAccording to Apple's page as posted above the iMac is on when you activate Target Display so it remains on and then you should be able to switch back to the iMac without a reboot or anything like that. Just follow the Apple support link that was posted in this thread.
