Does wifi sync save smses?

I suppose with contacts be available on all iCloud devices, saving all phone numbers etc isn't such a big idea. But say you lose your phone, does it save your smses every time you plug into the wall? It just seems incredibly fast when it does a wifi sync. I don't think it's a huge deal myself, but others may feel differently and you may need to still plug into the computer to back up everything?
