Does Wireless Diagnostic Tool really find the best channel?

I was wondering if anyone uses the Wireless Diagnostic tool that's native to Yosemite.

I ran the scan and changed it to the channel it recommends. Then, if I run the scan again, the tool recommends a totally different channel and it's not 1, 6, or 11 which are the non-overlapping ones on 2.4GHz.

I found articles that say you shouldn't leave it on auto.

I'm not in a heavily populated. Am I missing something?
