Does work NEED a PIN/ESN#?

I am trying to get my work to send/push me secure email on my iPhone like they do to my friends with BlackBerry's. The are requesting the Model # and a PIN or ESN#. Do they relly need these and can they cause shenanegins on my phone haven this info?

PINs are only on blackberries, and ESN is a CDMA thing, the iPhone is GSM so it doesn't have an ESN.

So....I guess the IT people are not very iPhone savvy. What would having those numbers do for them in terms of their secure email system...and what would be analagous on the iPhone to allow me to access the system (is is some kind of firewal verification issue)?
