My HomePod had been making the occasional popping sound for a few months, then the death-farts started ....
has anyone else had this problem?

Yes I had this on my launch day AirPod. I stupidly lived with it as it was only occasional but became more frequent and ended up starting doing it while I was asleep. Out of warrantee I managed to argue and get it replaced. If you have tried all the reset stuff get it changed as it will likely get worse.

Yeah, I had this issue with a near launch-day HomePod. At first it would fart when music wasn't playing. Then the other day it started farting during music. I finally did a reset and updated the OS. When I plugged it in it started farting like a machine gun in rapid even successions. So I unplugged it, waited about 10 seconds and plugged it in again. It let out it's last fart and now there is absolutely no bass. It sounds like a 1960's radio now. I called Apple and they basically told me it's gonna cost more to repair then to just buy a new one.

Update: With Covid restrictions - I finally got it into Apple this week - I’m about 3 months out of the 2 year warranty... They replaced it on spot.

I’ve had a bad run with Apple‘s warranties on my last 2 iPads - genuinely surprised they stood-up here. Thanks Apple.

I had the exact same thing happen and Apple did not honor beyond my Apple Care which expired in FEB 2020!

I have four HomePods. One has been doing this for a few months now. I took it to Apple yesterday and they refused to help, unless Apple recognise this as an issue then I have to buy a new one. It is not usable and I can’t leave it plugged in overnight as it came happening even when no audio is playing and it is super loud. Really disappointed, it’s a £300 paper weight in my kitchen. Speakers last decades, not 2 years!!!!

How old was it?
Near launch day or a lot newer?

It was a launch day, the others are newer as I added over time.
Seems like a common issue with launch day HomePods. I have a launch day one and one that is less than a year. Will be interesting to see if it fails over the coming 6 months to a year.

Yeah - Im going to keep watching because if Apple acknowledge this as a 'known defect' then they will replace it, else we are all doomed!

I bought two HomePods a few months ago. They both do this. And they both get confused about networks and voice commands often. Siri also often responds when no one has spoken to her - and even when there's no sound in the room. What a waste of money.

Were they refurbs or previously owned?
I know OWC sells refurbs, amongst others.

Both bought brand new. I have friends who don't get the fart but do have issues with their AirPods losing connection to their home networks. It used to be that Apple's software was the best, most stable and most reliable. That's been slowly changing in recent years. With iOS 13 and its variants, the bugginess has become unacceptable in my humble opinion. Apple had better get its act together. A reputation earned over a generation can turn to rubble in only a couple of years. Paying for Apple's expensive hardware only makes sense if the software works just as well.

Yeah...My HomePod is 2 1/2 years old and just up the ghost....is just stopped working yesterday (Sunday). Called support and we tried everything...was told could take it into an Apple repair but most likely will cost me $298 to fix...yeah ok. Apple supposedly makes long-lasting products...so this was/is a huge disappointment. Hesitating t0 buy a new one..but I do love ...or did love...this product. NOTE: The HomePod turned off and every few seconds the volume control turned on and off....When pressing on top it turned from white to the red death

I just started getting this on one of my HomePods today. For the past few weeks, the volume button lights don’t turn off either. Does anyone recall seeing that behavior before the farting? I’m bummed because it won’t even be possible to purchase a new one anymore (Space Gray).

The Volume Light issue is unrelated (Well, it might cause overheating...) - Reports are that if you have your HomePods paired with AppleTV for audio output, a recent OS update causes the volume controls to remain lit even when there's no audio playing.

This is reportedly resolved in 14.6

If the HomePod is popping and a reset doesn't resolve it, it's most likely a hardware failure.

Thank you very much for that. I did some digging the other day with the settings and reboots of the HomePod and ATV and absolutely removing it as the default audio turned the volume lights off. It was running warmer than my other HomePods when lit so I hope it didn’t cause permanent damage. Also rebooting corrected the farting sounds. Waiting for 14.6 now. Thanks again!

Edit* and a quick browse through MacHash news shows that 14.6 for ATV and HomePod is released to the public 👍

I just updated the bad one of my two HomePods with OS 14.6, so now they’re both the same. Unpaired, removed, reset, then re-paired for stereo, and…

Static and popping all over again. One works fine, but the other just sucks, and they are only good for me in stereo.

Somebody needs to set up a class action for this. I’ve got pro powered monitor speakers that have lasted 20 years that I paid $125 apiece for. These HomePods should be recalled.

Same here. One of my HomePods started the farting today after three years. Someone wrote that he had this on newly bought ones, so i assume this is a general manufacturing defect, no use to get a replacement. Lousy job and likely the reason why they discontinued the product. Why haven’t i seen any press coverage of it yet?
