I have a 120GB Lacie firewire 400 hard drive and I just bought a new iBook 12".
When I put my old iBook - 600mhz G3 - to sleep by closing the lid the drive parked itself and turned off.
Now when I do the same thing the drive parks itself but remains on. The blue light on Lacie stays on even when I unmount the drive.
I´ve tried this connected straight to the iBook and with a FW-hub with same results.

This isn´t a big deal but just wondering how is your drive dealing with sleep...

Powerbook 12" and LaCie d2 extreme.
When I:
-put powerbook to sleep: Drive parks, but the light is still lit.
-unmount the drive: Drive parks, but the light is still lit.
-unmount the drive and remove the fw cable: Drive parks, and shuts down.
-turn the computer off. Drive parks, and shuts down.

The light appears when there is still power on the FW port.
My powerbook still has power-on FW ports when its asleep.

My guess is that the ibook g3 doesn't have power-on the FW port when asleep. (like my G4 tower doesn't have power-on the FW ports when asleep.)

I have a pair of LaCie d2 drives attached to my iMac, and both of them go to sleep but remain on when the iMac goes to sleep. Like cluthz said, the reason why this happens is that even when the computer is asleep, the FireWire ports still have power.
