So what would happen if your computer crashed at a most inopportune time?

Of course there are many real world examples that are not quite so dramatic, like when the navy's billion dollar destroyer had to be towed in to port because they got the MS Blue Screen. Or when Wynn Las Vegas slot machines and check-in/out went on the blink for the same reason, only a day or two after they opened.

I just pray that if I ever end up in a hospital, that that one is using Macs, Sun, Linux, anything but MS!!!!

There was an airport in California that had Windows servers running the ATC so after 49.7 days or so it shut down because the software does that and hence hundreds of airplanes were left without ground contact. There were a few close calls.
