I never noticed this before, but I am now and it's starting to piss me off.

I swear it never happened before my Genius Bar appointment on Monday, where they replaced the scissor switch for one of my keys.

I wasn't happy with the "Genius" as he rotated my MBP by gripping the side of my display and dragging it around, rather than holding the main body of the machine, as I have always done.

I've tested this, and the "click" sound appears to happen when the screen lights up after opening the lid. Is this normal, and maybe I just never noticed it before?

If you have a MBP or MBA could you please test for me? You may have to be in a quiet room to hear it.

Thanks.

In my bedroom with the door closed, in a quiet part of the city, with my ear right against my Air I can hear a faint click when the display lights up.
Hello TouTou.

Thank you for responding.

Have you noticed this before? Do you think it is normal, and nothing to worry about?

I wonder why it doesn't make the same faint click noise when the screen is woken from sleep? Only when the lid is first opened?

Actually mine makes the exact same sound when the screen is woken without moving the lid. It's probably the display/backlight powering up. Electronic devices often emit audible sounds, they're just very quiet. Both my older MBP and my other Dell machine make the faintest noise when scrolling or copying files.

Hello TouTou, thank you for reassuring me.

Maybe it's always happened, but I just never noticed it before? However, my eyesight and hearing are both excellent, so I can't fathom how I haven't noticed it until this point?

I haven't noticed anything on my MBA M1, but I'm coming from a MacBook 13" that I dropped numerous times. I figured it was from damage from dropping that made the popping noise.

Update:

It's now night time here in the UK, and I just tested it by waking the display (not opening the lid) and you're right, it makes the exact same sound.

With respect, you come across as quite a pedantic person. All these "Have you seen/heard/experienced this" threads and comments are quite needy.

Just enjoy your products.

No pip sound here. Mine's perfect. Yours isn't. *gasp*

Sorry, had to. You're sort of just asking for it. But, in all seriousness, it sounds like an incredibly minor issue. Certainly nothing to be alarmed bout.

My original M1 MBA ordered at launch had this problem. After a few weeks of flip-flopping over whether it annoyed me enough to replace (thank you holiday return policy!), I saw my local Apple store had some available for pickup. After taking it home, I was relieved to discover the new one is dead silent when opening the lid now.

How can you comment on something being “an incredibly minor issue” and “certainly nothing to be alarmed about” when you’re not experiencing the issue?

It’s incredibly annoying, on such an expensive device.

As you say, yours is perfect, so why expect others to settle for less?

“With respect” this is a forum for discussion and seeking advice.

I’ve simply reached out to see if others have experienced the same issue.

I’m “quite needy”? Seems like you have too much time on your hands, with such bitter comments.

If you have nothing constructive to say, I suggest you just steer clear. At the end of the day, it could be you needing advice at some point.

I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow, but I'm unsure as to whether I should cancel it or not?

The clicking sound is really irritating me. However, apart from this, the screen is perfect. No dead pixels, no light bleed, no flickering. Everything is nice and crisp.

The only thing they can do (if they agree to do anything) I assume would be to replace the screen. This is because the clicking sound definitely happens when the screen lights up. Thus, it must be the backlight powering up.

This concerns me, as I could end up with dead pixels or other issues.

I'm really unsure what to do?

As stated before, I'm almost certain this issue was not present, prior to my previous GB appointment where they replaced a scissor switch. Therefore, I'm not happy that I'm having to go through this.

I've had some sarcastic responses to this post, but I really need some advice.

What would you do?

Thanks in advance.

No clicking on my M1 MBP. And I'm someone who can hear my work provided Dell's coil whine fairly well (cellphone barely picks it up in 100% quiet room).

Did you end up going to the Apple store to have them look at it?

What would I do? Depends on how loud it is. Barely audible, I'd ignore it. Enough to bother me (to write a post)? I'd try to get it replaced especially if I'm within my 14 days.

Thanks for the civil response.

I took it into the Apple Store yesterday, and the “Genius” (don’t make me laugh) took it out back to observe.

He came back and told me that he could hear the click, but he wouldn’t worry about it as it’s just the display lighting up.

He also told me that he’d checked the alignment of the case. It wasn’t until I got back home and checked again, that I now have an additional creek, coming from what must be the hinges! This was not there prior to his “checking the alignment of the case” so he’s obviously done something to it.

I’ve been on the phone to Apple customer relations, and I’m hoping to get my money back via consumer law. The representative is calling me back on Tuesday.

I’ll never trust a “Genius” again. Two of them have caused issues with my device, and that’s unacceptable.

Thank you for your response.

That's unfortunate. My wife's iPhone 6s+ was destroyed by an Apple Store one time - they actually handed it back to us with half the screen lit up, then when we complained, they (very frustrated) said they'd fix it and gave it back to us - but it was restarting every 30 seconds lol. So we just up and left - went to another Apple Store near our house that we knew was good - 6 mins we walked out with a replacement and an apology about the other store. Some are good - some are really really bad (more bad than good in my experience).

Good luck getting it replaced - a creak and click would bother me a LOT on a laptop worth this much. (You got the 512/16GB too).

Let us know what happens - hopefully Apple replaces it. Hope your weekend goes better!

Thanks, buddy.

It’s refreshing to converse with someone on here who’s not so far up Apple’s a** that they excuse all and any mistakes they make!

I’m aiming for a full refund. I’ll just use my iPad Pro + MKB and wait for the new MBPs.

So one of my scissor switches semi failed, and had to be replaced. It was only after this that the screen clicking occurred. Then I had the issue yesterday where the “Genius” caused my hinge to start creaking. Not a good run, is it?

Thanks again for the response, and I wish you a great weekend. I’ll let you know what happens, my friend.

Hello McGuire,

Hope you're well.

I heard from the Apple representative today, and they have agreed to refund me.

The question is, do I buy another one of these or wait for the new MBPs?

What would you do?

I now just have to find out how to reset/reformat this machine. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Stay safe, buddy.
