don’t remember your administrator password

I don’t remember your administrator password. How can I reset it? I saw somewhere you can reset it using the Mac OS X install media. What's the easiest way going about this? Will that wipe everything off my computer when I reinstall Mac OS X media? Sorry I'm new to all this and it will not let me update my ipod without the password so is telling me to reset
