Until last week, I was one of those users clinging to my old Intel MBP. After all, I had everything I needed: a 15" screen and a high-quality laptop that was still very functional, even on Sequoia.

I'm searching for a new place now, so I decided to finally treat myself to a new machine that has no lags when browsing the property websites.

Boy, did I get so much more than that!

(I went for the MacBook Air M4/15"/16/512).

The unexpected benefits of upgrading:
  • Touch ID: It doesn't just work to log in to the laptop; it works for every website: Google, Facebook, etc., plus Apple Pay.
  • iPhone Mirroring: I've used this feature several times already. Not having to get up to get my phone feels really nice.
  • Battery life: It's absolutely insane. I haven't charged the laptop for 5 days, and I'm at 61%.
  • Browsing speed: It's not just faster; it feels up to 5x faster than my MBP.
So, don't hesitate to upgrade if your budget allows. It's time!

If you know someone who is an Apple employee, you can get a 15% discount.

The bottom pic shows how much smaller the 15" MBA is compared to the 15" 2015 MBP.

A ten year old laptop doesn’t perform as capably as one sold today? Stop the presses!
Your comment is much appreciated. I don't think you understood my post though. The idea is to appeal to the people who are clinging to their old Macs and to explain that you get so much more than just a faster laptop with the MBA.
Also, the comparison is between a 10 year old MacBook Pro vs the current MacBook Air.

Im still clinging on to mine at the moment (13” 2015 MBP), but it works almost like new, thats the quality of Apple products for you. I prefer to use a iPad Pro with magic keyboard as my daily, but i need a Mac as the centre of my ecosystem so need to upgrade it soon. The M4 Macmini and MBA are top quality, great value devices so have good options here.

I came from a 2019 MBP 16” intel 8-core radeon gpu to a 2025 MBA 15” 24/512.

For everything normal office use it’s just faster and more responsive. I did occasionally game dota 2 on the windows dualed partition. It got real hot but worked!

On the MBA it gets warm and it works. But i notice that performance does degrade over time. Therefore I will go ahead with the heatpad or rather minuspad from Thermal Grizzly. I have messaged them to see if they have any suggestions regarding MBA M4.

I was in the same boat as you! :) The good old 15 inch from mid-2015 was still working, but needed something brand new to be able to write iOS apps for the latest operating systems. I got the same color as you, but with 1 TB SSD on board and 32 GB RAM (I plan to keep this machine for another decade).

So far, I am more than impressed with everything, from the smaller footprint and thinner design to the performance and silent operation of this very capable laptop. I also own the last Intel iMac (27 inch from 2020), and this Air is even faster compared to that desktop!

Totally agree with the above. This is probably the best time to upgrade for folks who have held onto their MacBooks for more than 7-8 years. Apple Silicon is also mature enough and therefore most apps are now optimized for the M-series processors.

And speaking of apps, the fact that we can run iOS / iPadOS apps is yet another advantage. Just installed 2 iOS apps on my Air (even though I can access them via iPhone mirroring).

Which iOS apps did you install? I haven't really messed with iOS or iPadOS apps does for the Mac, but I am curious. I want to get the most out of my machine

Just realized that one of them is actually a native macOS app. The other one is from Hik Vision (has a red icon with a purple gradient) and I use it to view the surveillance cameras from my warehouse. Fun thing about this app: it needed to scan the configuration based on a QR I generated on my iPhone in order to set up the cameras. I allowed access to the front facing camera of my Air and the laptop immediately parsed the QR and all my cameras showed up inside the “desktop” app.

The only feature I miss is having Windows on my laptop.
Well, you can run Windows 11 ARM through Parallells or Fusion, but if you need anything else you're out of luck. That's why I'm holding on to my 2020 Intel MBP. I have to run an old Windows program for work, and an XP virtual machine does the trick nicely. On an M4 i might be able to run XP through UTM with sufficient speed through emulation, but I don't dare ditch the old machine quite yet.
