I'm watching this thing on the history channel and 2012 is going to be some crazy pole changing, earth destroying, changes on the Winter solstice.

Science people clue me in here. Is this going to have disastrous effects?

If someone doesn't sort out the US economy, we won't last until 2012. The London Olympics should be interesting, in an eschatological kind of way.

If nothing else, Francis Fukuyama may feel redeemed, though in a way he would never have expected.

Probably about as eventful as the new millennium, what with the Y2K bug and all.

The only reason we know about the Mayan calendar at all is because the codex it was on was rescued by a thoughtful missionary, along with a handful of others (out of hundreds). Unfortunately, some of that codex was lost, and so we don't really know the whole story. If the codexes hadn't been burned by the missionaries, we'd have a more accurate idea.

The only intriguing thing is that the date has been discussed by many different civilizations throughout history.

themadchemist, I just read a article about Fukuyama before taking this break.

And what evidence did the show give to back up such a claim?

This whole 2012 business is complete sensational nonsense. People really should be more skeptical.

2012 is not the end of the Mayan calendar. Scholars in the subject area think that there is no evidence to show that the Mayans believed the world would end in 2012

No truth in their claims whatsoever. Basically, they're either absolute nuts, or trying to take your money.

The poles will reverse in the future, but it won't be in 2012 and certainly will take longer than one year to complete. We are unsure of the ramifications of such a reversal, but I assure you, the earth will not start rotating in the opposite direction and/or explode.

Although, the sun will in fact reverse it's poles in 2012 (Link), as usual every 11 years.

About time for another one of these. Doesn't anyone remember this Y2K thing? We though the computers would go crazy because the date would go out of the 1900s. Oh well, this seems like it'll make a good movie. Good bye world :D

Yeah but what about next week?

Did you know next week 2 astroids might hit 2 different plants in our solar system?

One being Mars, rock name 2007 WD5 on Jan 30ish

the other Earth, rock name 2007 TU24 on Jan 29ish

while not very big they can cause headaches if they hit

When The Poles Reverse

All iPhones will stop working. Get ready for the iPolor-reversalPhone coming in 2012.
