All my pictures or videos have a single dot icon instead of a miniature.

Corrupt finder plist? That is, com.apple.finder.plist
You'll find it in HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences
Move it to the Desktop.
Restart the computer. This will make a new default plist in Preferences.
If no better, the next thing to try is another user account.
