I have just started to notice a double tick noise every 3 seconds from under the right hand speaker of my Macbook Pro 3.1

Its a gentle soft kind of tick and barely audible , but I haven't been aware of it before.

Adjusting the volume control doesn't affect how loud this noise is, so it seems to be mechanical.

Anyone any thoughts on what this might be and whether it is the harbinger of doom for some mechanical component.

Many thanks,

Graham

it's your fan

mine is doing the same thing, coming from the right-hand side of the computer. i installed istat pro (link below), and it turns out my right side fan isn't turning (it's at 0 rpm; the minimum is 2000 rpm). if your computer is under applecare or warranty, just take it in and they'll take care of it. otherwise, i think a new fan is about $50 if you want to try replacing it yourself, or it may just be a loose connection to the fan (there are four of them).

Thanks, I will give istatpro a go, I think I am just out of my applecare, but I have a look.

You are correct, a new left or right fan is about $50 each.
