I have my 1G iPod touch, but now I also an iPhone 4. Since my iPhone can do everything much faster/ better, I kinda wanna return my iPod touch to how it was right when I got it; probably just keep some iTunes music and videos on it. I've downloaded many different iOS verisons, but none of them work easily. When I restore choosing the firmware, I get Error 20. This is on my MacBook Pro 2011 with completely updated OS X and iTunes. Anyway to get iTunes to load the old firmware or is there a 3rd party application that can help me accomplish my goal? Thanks!

Some background info on 3.1.2 to 2.2.1 on iPhone 2G.

The 3.1.3 to 2.2.1 downgrade is a bitch.

You need to use an older version of iTunes (8, I think, google for it) and DFU mode. No matter what I tried, the 2.2.1 FW would not stick, in the end I flashed 1.1.4 (from 3.1.3) where it got stuck in the middle of the process. From there, I flashed 2.2.1, and it worked :)

Now, I'm guessing that from there you could downgrade to iTunes 7, and flash 1.1.5.
