Downgrade iPhone 3G with iTunes 10.5 does't work

I want to downgrade/restore my iPhone 3G from iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 3.1.3 using iTunes 10.5.

I tried it at least three times, always with an unknown error. (1645)

You need an older version of iTunes to do that. Try v9.x or even v8.x maybe im wrong, but worth a try..

I'm using Lion. As far as I know iTunes 9 won't work with my OS.

see if you can get hold of iTunes 10.4 then, that should work...
