Hi there,

I got a new 2018 15" Macbook Pro. My main work software Ableton Live seems to have huge issues on the preinstalled OSX High Sierra. Is it possible to downgrade my OS or is this no longer possible with High Sierra? Thanks for your help!

Cheers!

it isn’t possible with the 2018. Older versions of macOS don’t support the T2 chip, nor the hex-core processors. High Sierra is the lowest you’ll be able to go.

There is a new software company entitle Cyberdyne that will develop Interfusable Operating Systems for computers that feature the T2 chip installed in logic boards. Their CEO Miles Bennett Dyson seem like a hands on guy with a great future in cybernetics as well.

Even if that is the case, the older versions of macOS STILL won't contain the kexts to support the hardware in the new model.

The oldest version of osx you can install is the version that came with your Mac. The older versions of osx simply do not have the kexts for the new Mac

Do you have a URL for that?

Oh maybe we'll finally get time travel as well.

Sounds like it time for Ableton to update their software. Any incompatibilities issues will probably get worse with Mojave.:(

I see what you did there.

OP:

As others have explained, you CAN'T "downgrade" the original OS that came on the MBPro.

What you need to do is get an updated version of Ableton that works for you.
Or... switch to a different DAW app... :(

Suggestion:
You might go over to gearslutz.com and browse the boards there...

Does this include downgrades within High Sierra (i.e. from 10.13.6 to 10.13.2)? I've got a brand spanking new Macbook Pro for work that I can't actually access my the network on because the security software they use isn't compatible with 10.13.6

You can't run anything lower than 10.13.6 on the 2018 MBPs.

It's ironic their "security" software requires running an OS with many known vulnerabilities. Someone's making some bad decisions in that organization.

You're SOL, because 10.13.2 does not include the device drivers/kexts needed to drive the new chipsets, and Apple isn't about to update old versions to make it run. If you have software that is incompatible to a specific version of macOS, then I recommend you reach out to the vendor for a patch.
