Just as the title says, I'm considering "Downgrading" from my 14 PM to 13 PM.
Last year when the 14 PM was announced, I made the mistake as I'm sure others did, of buying into the "dynamic Island" hype, because Apple does a really good job at marketing their products.
Well, now that the honeymoon phase is over, I've realized that it was a huge waste of money "upgrading" to the 14 from the 13. Sure certain things are better about the 14, but they aren't features that make the phone way better than my 13, especially in the battery department, I feel like my 13 Pro Max got better battery life by a pretty significant margin.
Should I sell my 14 PM and go back to my 13 or would I be utterly insane? And in the same sense, should I keep my 14, and sell the 13?

I would purely think of the economics here, if you bought the 14 at full price you will probably loose quite some money after only a short amount of use. Then it would make more sense to me to keep the 14 which you already got and sell the 13 while it's still worth something. I would agree that both phones are close in terms of features.

I agree with this suggestion. Keep the 14, sell the 13.

Your 13 PM may have gotten better battery as you stated, but is the 14 PM battery not enough for your daily particular needs? I have the 14 PM and never use more than 40% of the battery in any given day.

The Dynamic Island is something I’ve really enjoyed but understand that it’s still early in how app developers will grow in utilizing it. Lots of great possibilities there.

Lastly is the satellite signal capability of the 14. Something you may (hopefully) never need but if you ever did I don’t think you would be happy you downgraded.

I had a 13 Pro before the 14 PM. It was a amazing phone which I loved. For me personally I wanted to try a max model and the Dynamic Island really interested me. I’ve never looked back. Whatever you decide, best of luck. Two great phones!

What’s the point of downgrading? It sounds like you have buyers remorse but you’re way past the return period so just stick with your decision. Why are you thinking about this months after you made the purchase? You mentioned battery life, but do you think that’s real or just because during the transition it had shorter battery life. When you get a new phone it’s going to have shorter battery life because the iOS version is new so buggy and you’re messing with it a lot. I don’t feel my 14 has a shorter battery life than the 13 I had before. Of course I haven’t run tests with a timer or anything but both last me all day.

You’re not going to get much doing a you’re a one-year upgrade. I went from the 12 to 13 then to 14. I feel the upgrade was from the 12 to 13 when it comes to battery life but the 14 seemed about the same as the 13. On the negative side, I’ve had problems, trying to get the camera of the 14 to focus on close objects. I’ve never had this problem with the 13 so I suspect it’s the new 48 megapixel sensor sensor. I really think that was one of those android style spec upgrades rather than a real upgrade. It sells phones though.

Up to you, I got an absolutely mint refurbished 13 Pro 6.1” and think it’s a battery king! I use the timer on my phones for cooking and thought that dynamic island would be great for that, but didn’t want to pay new iPhone Pro prices, and then iOS was updated and gave a MUCH improved timer view on the Lock Screen, jut need to tap the phone, so I don’t need Dynamic Island anymore. Well happy with my 13 Pro.
But if you sell your 14 Max you will lose money.

With phones being able to last for a very long time now, and costing over a grand, you really need to think if you need that latest and greatest, or if the deal you are getting is good value before buying.

I would probably keep the 14, and if you don’t need to sell the 13 keep it as a backup? Or sell it if you need the money.

I appreciate all the advice on this thread! After reading the replies, I came to the conclusion that it'd be in my best interest to hold onto my 14 PM and just sell my 13 PM. Not only would it be smart financially, but in terms of me overreacting too. I talked some sense into myself about how both phones get great battery life, and while I did get better battery life on the 13, both phones last me well throughout the day with heavy use, so there is no point in me complaining about the worse battery life on my 14. Thanks again, everyone!

How long was your honeymoon period ?

Glad to hear you made a decision! I think iOS 17 will hopefully improve battery life even more on the 14 PM.

I was in the same predicament. I decided to keep using the 14 PM. My 13 PM is backup. And eventually I'm going to factory reset it and use a different Apple ID to use as my Travel phone with less of my personal info on it. Especially since it still has physical SIM Card tray. My issue with the new 14PM was more the initial battery life seemed way worse. And Apple Music seemed overly buggy. Constantly pausing. But that could have been more the App being buggy than the phone hw. I think it was the Lossless issue with Apple Music. But Dynamic Island I agree is too gimmicky and I haven't really become a fan of it now that' I've lived with the 14 PM for about 3 weeks now. Maybe future refinement to the DI will improve it. But I wouldn't say it was a deal breaker. Hopefully IOS 16.5 addresses some of those issues.

I really hope it does! I'm holding out hope even though iOS 16 has been quite bad for me

Ah gotcha! I'm going to try selling the 13, and if I for some reason don't find a buyer, I'm just going to keep it and run beta software on it or something of the sort.
iOS 16 has been a nightmare for me in terms of just complete bugginess, which absolutely did not help with the experience of the 14 PM.
It's way too early to tell because 16.5 was just released yesterday, but so far it's looking a bit promising. Here's to the hope that iOS 17 will be great and will fix the battery drain i've been experiencing on my 14.

Also, if you feel your honeymoon with Dynamic Island has ended, the upcoming iOS 17 might reignite your passion for the Island, with more features integrated into it.
I purchased 14 Pro Max for the 48MP sensor and not the Dynamic Island, but I hope Apple and other developers maximize its use...

Keep them both and then 2 months before the 15 lands sell the 14, go back to your 13 with the better battery life use the money you got from 14 to get the 15 when that arrives.

I think you’ll be able to sell the 14 for a good price around late June/July.

Get the 15 in September.

I think you’re onto something here 🤔

I don’t know why someone with a 13 PM would have even upgraded to a 14 PM in the first place when there is so little difference. I’m sure there are reasons if someone really needs that slightly better camera or the floating notch, but the OP must have realised annual upgrades rarely give you vast differences. My wife has a 14 Pro and I have a 13 Pro Max and there really is very little between them. Even photos are much the same, granted I haven’t been printing them out on A3 to check the pixel counts, but still lol.

Goodness me, it’s like a £200 difference, that’s like a night out lol. It’s what Americans would call chump change

Also the jump from 13pm to 14pm is the most significant between any 2 pro phones, as you have a paradigm shift in terms of design and how you interact with it (ie dynamic island) as well as several new headline features

You shouldn’t be thinking about the 13 at this stage, with the 15 series around the corner the only concern should be whether you upgrade to that or not
