The 14PM is a hell of a phone, but it’s really heavy and bulky and vastly overpowered for what I do. I kept seeing YouTube videos about people who were all about the 13mini so I looked into downgrading.

But Apple doesn’t sell them any more and they seem to be priced at exactly the same price as regular 13s. The mini seemed like maybe too much of a downgrade so I went with the regular. At launch it was £779. It’s now £599. My 14PM was £1,099 (I think). It’s worth more than £599 now, so I’m up on the deal.

So far I’m delighted. I honestly am not noticing any difference between the 13 and 14PM. I’ve lost 120Hz: I can’t tell. I’ve got a smaller screen: I’m just not noticing it. I’ve lost the dynamic island and always-on display: I really don’t care — both sound great but in practice are kinda gimmicky.

The main downgrade is in the camera set up: no physical zoom for me. But I was always more about landscapes than close-ups. And I never look at my photos again after I’ve uploaded the best 1% to Instagram.

Anyhoo, my point is that I used to be obsessed with having the best. And I’ve cured myself. And saved a bundle of money in the process. And inconvenience: the 13 feels feather light to me.

I might even sell my AW Hermes. Though AW resale values are awful and it might not be worth it.

I have a 13 Mini, so it has the same specs as your regular 13- and I did briefly have a 14 Pro last year, so I have experienced roughly the same change.

I agree that performance-wise, I saw no difference between the two phones. Camera-wise, though- besides the lack of the zoom lens, there is a noticeable difference in that you don't have the 48mp ProRAW photo ability which was nice.

Everything else, yeah agreed- I didn't notice a real difference with the display, the dynamic island was cool but not a deal breaker, and you don't notice the lower amount of RAM.

The Mini has been great because to me it's the perfect size.... but I do wish it had the better cameras from the 14 Pro.

Oh — also: I got the Product Red. It is stunning. I’ve never really liked any of the Pro phone colours.

Update (for the almost no people who were interested!)

The one thing I really missed was the optical zoom. I hadn’t realised just how often I used it.

So I’ve upgraded from the 13 (regular) to the 15 (regular). That’s still a technical downgrade, though the 15 has an awful lot in common with the 14PM.

Coming from a 7 Plus to the regular 13. I'm wondering just how much I'll miss the telephoto on the 7 Plus. The 15 doesn't actually have a dedicated telephoto, and thus is a 2x-crop.

Are you happy with 15's quality at 2x ?

For what I do, yes. I hated only having a 0.5x and 1x. The 2x gives me more options and the quality seems fine.

Otherwise you have to go Pro, and I don’t want that expense any more.

The design of the 15, alongside a lossless 2x zoom without a third lens should be considered as an upgrade. The battery life is excellent for its size too.
