I've been thinking to downsize to the 15" M4 MBA due to regular travel as the MBA is lighter and slightly smaller.

My existing 16" M3 MBP is super cold never gets hot even when charging. Can the same thing be told about the 15" MBA?

I like to place the laptop on my lap and hate having to remove it due to feeling warm/hot.

These are the temps i am getting while being on battery and having several chrome tabs open. How does this compare to the 15" MBA?
Does your 15" MBA get hot while charging or doing everyday stuff?

No, the MBA is not going to get "hot" doing normal every day tasks. Even if you push it hard enough to make it hot, it may throttle performance a bit to help cool the chip, however its is still going to be fast. The M4 chip is insanely powerful

Why would the M4 MBA charge hot compared to an M3 MBP?

All lithium ion batteries get warm while charging and Apple products in general run a little warm in this regard.

However, the M2 MBA and up are all very cool running laptops. They all warm up while charging but never hot. In fact I charge my MBA in a laptop bag after I am done using it. I always check it by hand and it is never hot. It will warm up after 30 minutes or so of charging from a low % but unless it unusually warm in your area thermals or heat will not be an issue.

If you are very concerned I would buy the 15" air while you have your M3 MBP and while you have the two week return window cycle the battery and check the new air against your MBP and see how it feels. Do this for a week. Then you can compare everything at home and see if it works for you. That would be my suggestion if you can do it.

i have a 16" MBP M1 that I just packed up for a mail-in trade in for my midnight MBA 24/512. So far, I am thrilled with the swap. Yes, the screen and refresh rate of the pro would be nice on the MBA body, but overall, I prefer this form factor. it is just so much lighter and a pleasure to use....the 16" MBP is really a desktop machine that can be portable for me. The 15" MBA feels like a portable device. I am happy with the choice so far. I haven't reached any crazy temps yet at all with some 4k footage edit from my Lumix S5IIX, photos, etc.

Right now I am on battery, have 7 tabs open in the Brave browser, my mail app, Apple Music and Messages open. Temp is 35c. No heat at all on the bottom of the Air....feels nice and cool. Under the heaviest load, it does get warm, but doesn't feel warmer than my M1 ever was.

I've just taken delivery of a 13" M4 Air 32G to replace a 14" M3 Max Pro 48G.

The M4 Air a lovely little machine. Light, fast and very capable. I also think the new blue colour looks nicer than anything available in the Pro line. I also prefer the keyboard somehow.

Best part - being significantly cheaper I can consider cycling to a new model every couple of years. MacBook Airs tend to hold their value well - I can't imagine an M4 Air depreciating significantly after 18-24m.

Only downside so far is the slightly sketchy external monitor support, at least compared to the M3 Max.

This is one of those moments where I'm taken back by quite how much compute is available in this little laptop. This thing is an absolute beast and I suspect is perfect for almost everyone outside of a few niche use cases.

What is the "sketchy external monitor support"? I connect an Apple 27" Studio Display and a 4k 27" monitor to the M4 MBA without any difficulty.

Very hard to pin it down 100% but it doesn't seem to support two external monitors where both are using USB-C (DP-Alt Mode) it can use one monitor or the other. I think your 27" Studio Display uses Thunderbolt which should sidestep the issue.

Certainly I got none of these issues on the m3 max. I can plug anything in anywhere and it just works.
2x Cooler Master GP27U if anyone is interested.

14" macbook pro is the correct answer. I'm a pilot and spend half my life on the road. It's not just the 120hz screen but the brightness and speakers that make it amazing. I use it every day i'm in a hotel for movies and shows. I don't use hotel tvs as their audio is way worse. You simply can't beat it. I really wish they'd just make a macbook air with a 120hz screen and their best speakers but I get it, won't happen.

I also struggled a lot between a 14 Pro or a 15 Air. I bought the Air, coming from a 16" M1 Pro 16G/1T.

Two colleagues have the 14 Pro and I was able to try them. My aging eyes forced me to ditch the default resolution on the 16 and go down a notch. I would do the same on the 14 and 15. This changes things a little, since on the Air it results on a perfect 2x scaling, while not on the pro machines (the default scaling is 2x). The 14 is just too small for me. As for screen quality, one can see the difference if they are one next to the other, specially the black levels. Working in code, office apps, email and Safari it's hard to notice the 120Hz difference for me. Also, I installed a matte screen protector on the 15 and results in much less reflections, while also not jeopardizing the image quality (specially the text). I went with the Brotect Airglass Mate. it's not easy to apply, but the final result was worth it for me. I haven't seen a nano screen in person, so cannot comment on differences, but alas it is a surcharge 5x greater than the protector.

The 15 Air is just more pleasant to work on than the 16 Pro ever was. And the weight in the backpack is very noticeable as is the thickness even with a sleeve. I don't miss the ports (no graphic/photographic/video work), but really like the feel of the keyboard (seems more "clicky" to me than the Pro).

I went for the 32G/1T version. I was afraid that would make the temps go a little higher, but no, it is in the ballpark of the M1 Pro, around 32~36ºC, but not as low as the M1 Air 13 2020 that I also have, that one idles at 27~30 ºC.

The performance is stunning, even more considering there is lower thermal headroom than the 16". Bear in mind I have never heard the fans "kick in" in the 16" in more than 2 years of use. I am currently using it in low power mode with a USB-C monitor attached to (AZORPA 16" 2560x1600) and the system power is... 10w. Without the monitor it goes to... 4w!!! I am using BT with phones and Wi-Fi.
I have a powerbank connected through magsafe 3 not to stress the battery and use aldente to sail around 85%. I get more than 13h without the external monitor, going from 85 to around 30. I never got that from the Pro, it is just a more power hungry machine (larger screen with more pixels, 5nm process chip,...).

The SSD is slower than the Pro, 3G/s vs 5G/s, but it is not noticeable in booting or when working. It can make a difference in copying large files or other scenarios, but not in my typical use case.

The headroom from the 32G RAM is just massive. I have never seen it swapping, I have 10 Safari tabs (one of them is Udemy, other is Strava), VSC, keynote, mail, chatGPT, Excel, Numbers, WhatsApp, Music resulting in 19% pressure, 0 swap and 12.5GB free. 24G would also be great, but I went for the safer side of things.

Finish is midnight. I love the color, but yes fingerprints are visible. Not bothered at all by them, very slightly visible. Also love the thickness, it is almost as thick as the Magsafe connector. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but I consider this to be a much nicer looking machine compared to the 16. Makes me want to use it more.

Feel free to ask me anything. But I doubt you will miss your Pro, unless you view HDR content regularly.

All the best!

How much throttling will the MBA do if you are playing games (Grim Dawn for me) via VMware Fusion/Windows?

I play something maybe once a week for a bit and this is the one thing that's keeping me on a Pro and not switching to an Air

I have been on the same journey as you, ending with the 15inch Air. Mine has the 16gb ram but its not used any swap files yet. Midnight is also my colour. Imam interested in the anti glare screen protector, was it hell to put on?!

Not hell, but not straightforward as a glass one. It is not exactly glass or TPU, it's a middle ground. It can develop bubbles, but are very easy to deal with the provided card. I placed mine after taking the laptop from the box, so I didn't have to clean the screen.
I would advise some kind of suction cup to grab it, which may help placing it without the fingers touching the adesive part. The fitting is perfect, leaving the notch unprotected because of the sensors and camera.

Great thread. Considered the same move with my trusty M1 Pro 16" last year, but after trying out a 15" air decided I wanted to keep my investment in the M1 Pro a while longer. While the form factor of the Air was perfect, the great speakers + display was hard to "downgrade." Plus, it wasn't like I was gaining the ability to use it on an airplane given the footprint so I was like forget it I'll just keep the M1 Pro monster.

+1 on moving from the 16" MBP to the 15" MBA. I made the switch and the 15" MBA is my all time favorite from 20 years of Apple laptops. I think the MBP is now truly a niche machine for a very small group of users that truly need what is offers above the MBA and are willing to pay the weight and size penalty. The MBA is my main work machine and I've never missed the MBP.

I am now convinced that the 15” MBA is probably the best “downgrade” coming from the 16”

Will the 16GB be enough for basic usage and a win11 parallels vm that i may open once in a while if required?

It depends now long you plan to keep it, but 24GB RAM would be my choice.
Seconded.

I’m sure 16GB will work but 24GB will give you sme extra headroom. Particularly for Parallels. Though I’d obviously depends which Windows applications you plan to use.

Only if Apple would not rip us off when comes to RAM prices 🤨

Reluctantly, I downgraded from a 14 inch pro to 15 air. The primary reason is keyboard comfort. Dealing with some arthritis in the hands for the last year or so and typing on the air is significantly more comfortable by a wide margin. I miss the screen on the pro but what good is a screen when I'm in pain while I'm typing on it.

I just moved from M3 Macbook Pro 14 inch to 15 inch M4 Air (Apple Store-in trade-in)
Reasons:
1. all my screens including large Dell are 60 hz and I don't game on Macs. I use only SDR content and in anyway, content looks great on M4 with RGB profile - I did not notice any difference with Macbook Pro screen
2. 8GB RAM seems limited so I moved to 16GB of RAM. It is a bit more future proof, though I have to say that 8GB on Macbook Pro never bothered me in any way.
3. SSD is 512GB. This was necessity since MBP also had 512GB.
4. I chose MIdnight as it is closest to black in Macbook Airs.
5. CPU and GPU are leading in its class, so I am happy with that.

The main advantage that it is slightly lighter as I carry it all the time. Also while on mobile, 15 inch is more useful than 14 inch and I have to use bigger text *eyesight aging.

Conclusion: m4 is a modern chip and architecture. Actually, M1 is still very good today as well but I just wanted mignight Air :)
