Downlaoded iphone upgrade and it locked

I have an older UNLOCKED 8gb iphone I bought from a friend. I made the ERROR of trying to upgrade this phone w/the new iphone operaiting system and it locked up. How do I unlock it and re-install older firmware that will make the phome work.

Just update through itunes to the newest firmware 3.0. then follow the instructions below.
