I tried out iGetter and Downloader as download managers. I then removed them both. However when I now click on a download click nothing happens. I suspect that there is some remnant of one or both which tries to call the program but can't find it.

However I have no clue where to start searching or what to search for. Any one with any ideas?

First of all, I suggest you check if either of those apps come with an uninstaller of their own, and if they do, you should try to uninstall those apps properly by using their uninstaller. (Assuming that you removed them simply by drag-n-drop method.)

Second, I'd suggest you download EasyFind (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11076/easyfind) and look for any files related to the two apps you mentioned and manually delete them... Empty your trash can, restart your computer and then report back here.
