I am cross-posting from Mac Applications forum after I received no responses there (probably should have posted here first).
I need to download pictures when a card is inserted into the cardreader.

I looked at iPhoto and Picasa, but they don't satisfy my needs.
On the Windows side, I use cam2pc (http://www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/) which is an awesome app and does exactly what I want:

1. Recognize when card is inserted.
2. Have the ability to download to custom folders (I have set it to download to Pictures/<camera_name>/<year>/<month>/<prompt_for_description>/
It will prompt me for description (and is smart enough to know that there could be multiple events in that month and hence will get multiple prompts)
3. Also rename the pictures (I use the same description as the folder).
4. Rotate the pictures based on Exif.
5. Delete pics from card (choice)
6. Open up default photo viewer for the directory created.

Thanks

From the sound of it. iPhoto should do what you want. Almost. That is because a memory cars looks to Mac OS just like a disk drive. So iPhoto will not react to it. If you plug a camera in then iPhoto will "see" a camera and react.

As for renaming the files. You just have to get used to the comcept of a "photo library" and let iPhoto (or Aperture or any of the others) manuage you collection based on medta data. using folder stuctures is just so "1990's". All the current system manage your files like book in a public library. the books have funny numbers on them but there are three of more card catalogs and each book might have several cards in the various catalogs.
