Download problem in safari

Has anyone ever experienced a machine that will connect to the internet perfectly, but refuse to take any downloads in the conventional manner through safari? Or have any ideas what could cause this?

My iBook used to crash everytime i would click on a download. The way i found to get around this was to right click and then press download linked file. This problem stopped once i reinstalled osx

unfortunately that looks like the only option!
