My SMS box is full and I'd like to keep some of the convos. Is there a way to download and save them on my mac?

Im not sure but i do know that SMS are backed up onto the computer so you would think that there has to be a way.

Really? Where are they on my computer?

Anyone else know how to save them?

I just googled "backup iphone sms to Mac" and found a piece of software called MobileSyncBrowser that purports to do just what you want. It's only on version 0.2, so don't know how stable it is, and as I haven't installed it, can't vouch for it's usefullness.

Nevertheless, it's available at VersionTracker, here:

If you try it tell me about it. Post it here. I am curious to know how it works.

Thanks, but I'm afraid to try third party software...especially anything related to the iPhone.

I wish Apple made an easy way to back them up if they were going to set that ridiculous limit of 1000 messages especially when we have a bunch of storage on the iPhone.

according to the software website, they use the data that is backed up to iTunes, and is already on your Mac, so it doesn't sound like you even need the iPhone to be plugged in when you extract the data.

I also found an article on the software here:

But again, I haven't used this, so judge for yourself.

Alright thanks. I'll check into it. If any MR users have tried one of these or any other please let us know how it is. Not that I'm too afraid myself to try it:rolleyes:

Seems to work fine. Although it says it is in preview mode, and thus it can only export 10 messages at a time. The files that contain backups seem to be located in:

/Users/(your user name)/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

which contains file many characters long. I cracked one open in textedit. I see some of my messages, however it is in a strange format. It would be tough to get it from these files yourself.

It also grabs notes and your call log.

hmmm...doesn't seem like it even does the trick.
