I recently got a new MacBook Pro (yesterday) and I immediately upgraded it to Mavericks and got all the new iLife apps. However, GarageBand 10 is a major step backwards in my opinion (missing features/instruments).

Can I download the previous version from the Mac App Store? It was installed on my Mac prior to my upgrade to Mavericks/new iLife.

Thanks in advance!

It should be accessible through your 'Purchased' tab.

Download Garageband

I feel the same way as you. The new version is missing the bottom that will display the sheet music and gives the ability to move single notes. Without this, I find it to be a huge step backwards. In the purchase section of the Mac App Store is the old version. I have both versions on my Mac just in case I ever need to use the new version. Garageband was one of the main reason I bought a new Mac, luckily I can still get the version that actually has use.

That's not true though... Score is accessible and you can certainly drag notes. When piano roll is open just click on "score" next to "piano roll. You get to that by selecting a track and clicking on the scissors on top for Editors.

I stand corrected. I missed where to turn on the editors. Thank you so much, you just made the new GarageBand useful to me. With the piano roll and the score for my band to collaborate, we can use the new version like the old.

new garageband major step back!

it seems just from the tutorials I've been watching theres a lot missing from this new version of garage band. What should I do?
I purchased a new mac book pro in dec 2013 and doesn't come with cd drive or install dvd anymore ( i don't think ) So..this version of Garageband is all i have.. is there a way to get the older version??
I never purchased an earlier version.
or, is there another way to sample, and chop up samples and assign them to keys on the keyboard or the musical typing keyboard?
So, yeah no sound effects to be found, no legacy, no way to control samples from keyboard.
So, if i didn't have garageband from before am i just stuck with this version?
if so, will search for another similar program, but bummer cause just spent a inch of time working within gb.
