If you have the 2012 MacBook Pro, it will support El Capitan.

Different versions of El Capitan don't matter. It's the main modifying number you need to look at. For instance, 10.6 is Snow Leopard. 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard with patches. 10.7 is a whole different operating system.

What OS are you currently running? If you click Apple menu > About this Mac, what does your model show as?

If it's definitely the 2012, you can download El Cap for free through the App Store.
