iBook G3 running 10.4.11

Hi from Chiangmai.

Well my old iBook which I got running with a 120baht ($3.50) charger, then repaired the video chip soldering problem by sticking a shim (coin) inside the case to keep it pressed to the logic board is still running happily and she loves it.
Then my girlfriend downloaded MSN Messenger.
It may be just a coincidence but at pretty much the same time I noticed the airport signal in the desktop bar was flashing slowly on and off. I checked and noticed this when she told me she couldn't open Messenger for the first time and I wondered about the internet connection.
I then opened system prefs and was on the network page when a drop-down appeared saying
"Your network settings have been altered by another application".
I clicked OK and the box disappeared for a second then came again. And again. And again.
I sent messenger to the trash and closed down for the night.
Today I looked again and went to sys prefs to try getting the airport icon up again.
Same again :
"Your network settings have been altered by another application". Click OK. Same again etc etc.
I can hide sys prefs if I wish, and I am connected to the internet.

Any ideas?

Well get rid of Messenger and download adium.

So much better, and it may be the solution...

Thankyou Lewis I shall suggest it.
But I doubt it will deal with the infinite loop problem, I already sent Messnger to the Trash.

Any more ideas out there?
