Downloaded ML, now Microsoft Office doesn't work

Were you running Office for Windows via bootcamp or parallels? Both have updates for ML available.
If you have Office for Mac, that also needs a patch to correct issues with ML. It's available via the auto-updater in Office.

I think it's an old version of MS Office, won't even start up now. Gives me "Power PC applications no longer supported".
That's way to old to work in ML...A copy of Office for Mac is what you need.
I doubt the auto-updater would help you with such a major revision; you will need to buy a new copy of Office.
You must have been upgrading from Snow Leopard, which was the last OS X to support powerpc stuff through rosetta. Rosetta and powerpc apps were dropped in Lion. There is no autoupdate path available to you in that case. You have to get office for mac 2011.
