... and now it won't open
it opens and closes immediately!
is this happening to anybody else? what do i do?

I did the EFI upgrade, the 10.8.2 upgrade, then the iPhoto 9.4 upgrade. iPhoto seems to open in less than 2 seconds. The first time it said it needed to update the library. No problems with any of the upgrades.

I also did it in that order. then it said update the library, and i did. and it failed i guess. and now im stuck in an endless loop of "repair library" and quitting unexpectedly :(

If i delete and reinstall iPhoto, what happens to the pictures I had in it?

The pictures aren't stored within the software, but rather within the 'iPhoto Library' file. So as long as that file is safe, so are your pictures.

Yep. If you manually delete iPhoto (do an "iPhoto" search in Finder), you can delete all but the folder of photos. You can also duplicate it or move the files to another folder for the time being just to be safe.
