I edit a lot of actor demo reels and believe it or not, often times its really hard for actors to get ahold of their own work. In many instances their appearance in a show is on air and online long before the studio gets around to sending them a copy of it (sometimes it just never happens) and I get requests constantly to take their videos from websites.
Recently, I'm getting more and more requests to pull from shows that have recently aired and are offered only on streaming sites like abc.com. Unlike easily downloadable youtube files, these are giving me a really hard time because it appears that the video is embedded somehow in a way that doesn't offer a URL up for the video itself.... I'm not a web-guy, I'm a video guy so I'm familiar but not savvy.
But does anyone know a good tool, method or trick to getting video like this down?
Obviously this is made difficult for a reason, but I just need to know if it is or isn't possible. If it's possible at all, I need to be able to offer the services to my clients, if not... well that's that.
AND... before you start...
It's not illegal to make a demo reel out of clips from copyrighted material as long as the clips are kept to a necessary minimum to demonstrate that person's work. I've worked in professional facilities that work with studios and it's a common practice to pull clips from a DVD or show recorded off-air to cut a sizzle reel... nobody has a problem with this practice... Also, making my living in this industry I'm personally very, very anti-piracy so I'm not looking to heat up any kind of debate.
