Trying to figure out what kind of application I need in order to download to my hard drive...please advise... My intent is to download links and files that are in the website (mp3's and a couple pdf's)

You could try SiteSucker (http://www.sitesucker.us/) or any alternative softwares/sharewares/freewares (http://www.eskimo.com/~pristine/offline.html)

Please not that even with the best software, you might not be able to download all files from a Website. Lots of Websites have a robot text file that prevent some files (or any) from being downloaded without an explicit FTP access (or a conventional Web browser access).
 
If you're not afraid of the Terminal, and you don't mind installing Fink, then wget is a very powerful tool for doing this. It can get around a lot of the problems that morespace54 mentioned because you can make wget provide the website with a user agent string so that it thinks its just a browser. However it will take some reading to fully utilise its power.
