Heaven or Hell
I have been downloading podcasts directly on my iPhone,
and they have successfully downloaded, but when i go to
play them, the file format is not supported !

Shouldn't the iPhone have a protection against wasting
your time and space not downloading stuff you cannot play !!

it should at least warn you that the file format is not supported !

Is there a way to convert to a compatible format straight on the iPhone ?

How could your iPhone convert anything? The file you downloaded should either be a mp3 or aac. I've seen podcasts before from iTunes that are mp3 and should play perfectly fine. Maybe you did something wrong.

Probably these are video podcasts. Some video podcasts are not in iPod format. All audio podcast in iTunes will play on the iPhone.

To the OP: check to see you are downloading the right version. Some video podcasts have an iPod or iPhone version.
