For the life of me, I cannot seem to get that download icon back in my dock (the one that stacks all the latest downloads) and it seems every time I download something new it goes in the trash. I've tried to drag the download folder back into the dock but that doesn't seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Safari > Preferences > General > Save downloaded files to: Downloads

Finder > Macintosh HD > Users > username > Downloads
(drag the icon from this location in Finder to the right side of the Dock.

Safari > Preferences > General > Save downloaded files to: Downloads

Finder > Macintosh HD > Users > username > Downloads
(drag the icon from this location in Finder to the right side of the Dock.

Worked like a charm. Thank you so much!

Well, actually, the new downloads are still going into my trash. The download icon is in the dock now but the actual file that is downloaded is going into the trash!

What's going on here?

Did you change the setting in Safari? Click the dropdown and select Other... and browse to your /Users/username/Downloads folder.

Safari's private browsing will not send downloads to the Trash. It has nothing to do with where files are downloaded.

i did read it, i just wanted to make a joke about the comp not liking him, chill out bro life isnt a drama, its a comedy.
I had nothing to say about your joke. I referred to your telling the OP to check their preferences, when they already had.

i have items i download that auto go to the trash but its normally drivers for acers / dell other laptops in zip format and what tens to happen is once the .zip is downloaded it extracts to downloads and then DELETES the zip file to trash...

just worth checking it out!!!

Years later... This seems to be caused by Safari setting "Open 'Safe' files after downloading. Turn this off / uncheck it. See screen grab.

My symptoms were dropbox files with .tar.gz endings were going to trash after downloading. After experimenting with the settings (same test, change one setting approach), the "safe open" option unchecked stopped the to trash issue.
