downloads of iPhoto/ilife

Hi,
I just upgraded to a second hand iMac running 10.9.1, loving it but early days finding myself in this new world after the last few years on a G5.
It doesn't have ilife applications uploaded on it. I probably only want iPhoto and maybe iMovie. I've seen ways of downloading for free. Can they be trusted or should I go straight to apple and just purchase?
Do you advise I get anti-viral software? X fingers I've never had an attack in my ten years of mac usage.
Advice appreciated.

For sure. Just wasn't sure if these apps should have been included with the Mavericks that is uploaded onto this computer.
