Downloads on dock

I accidentally lost my downloads folder icon on the dock. When I replaced (a shortcut? to it) by dragging from Finder|Go, newer items are no longer the first showed; I have to use "More in Finder". What determines sort order when I click the icon?

Simply right-click the icon in the Dock and there are several options. Sort by "Date Added" is probably what you want, and is what I use too.
