Downloads window help needed

When I download something while in Safari it pops up the regular Downloads window to show the progress.

That window remains blank. It doesn't show previously downloaded items or the progress of the current download.

After the download is complete I can find it in the Downloads folder but I can't tell when it has finished.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
