Dozens of GBs of space disappearing?

I have noticed on my 2008 unibody MBP that since installing Lion, my HDD space is disappearing. Not just a few gigs, but at this point over 175GB on a 500 GB drive. I was at one point left with 300MB!! I haven't added pictures or movies or anything else that could eat up this space.

Is there something in Lion that won't report the correct space available?

My option to reclaim the space at this point is a fresh wipe and install of Lion.

Use DiskInventory X (pre-Lion), OmniDiskSweeper, JDisk Report or GrandPerspective to see how space is being used on your drive.

have you turned off the time machine local backups? they eat up a lot of space.
