drag&drop album onto phone creates separate albums

i've searched high and low for someone having the same issue, but i've not found a thread yet. i have a vast music collection. all albums are in folders. i'm meticulous about all my tags being correct on files.

i've added them manually by dragging and dropping into itunes > ipod or iphone for years. never an issue until some time in the past few months. for some reason now when i do this on my phone it puts each track into a separate folder. if i then delete all the tracks and do the process again it creates a single album correctly. or, if i start by dragging just one track to the phone, let it sync, then drag the remaining files it also creates a single album as you'd expect.

because of how it working now it's going to take me days to add all my music back onto my x as i have to do every album one by one in a multi step process. btw i was having the same issue on my 6s+. again, this only started some time in the past few months so it has to be either an ios 11 issue or itunes issue.

anyone seen this behavior?

after wasting many hours figured it out. itunes no longer seems to like me dropping an album straight onto my phone. however, if i add it to my itunes library first then drag that onto the phone all is good.
