This seems to happen for when on particular web sites... how ever I came across a mac owners suggested solution.

Apparently if the mac is made to 'always start up in 32 bit' it goes away...and the described way is to do this:
In Finder "right" click on 'system preferences', click 'Get Info', change to 'Always start in 32 bit'.

However if I Right click on 'System Preferences' ..I get the same as a left click..ie system prefs display.

(Usng snow leopard on an iMac 5,1)

That 'solution' doesn't make any sense to me; running the System Preferences app in 32-bit mode is unlikely to prevent system crashes, especially when Sys Prefs isn't something you typically keep running in the background.

Ta Nermal.. didn't know enough but was curious.
I couldn't find the original post they refered to.

Ta Nermal... I did wonder...but just thought I didn't know enough about how things work.

I think we may be confusing the issues here.

Is the issue that you’re having your Mac crashing (the OS itself, requiring a restart of the computer) or is it System Preferences popping up a message telling you that you need to restart System Preferences to use a specific preference pane?

The solution you posted only works for the second one. If your Mac OS is crashing, we’ll need some more info about what exactly is going on in order to help you :)

Good point, Multi..I do tend to go off on a tangent sometimes.
My crash was indeed not in regard to System prefs.. and appeared to be due to the web site content but could also be to do with other apps I had running at the time eg EyeTv. It happens so infrequently that pin pointing the actual course seems impossible but Im not all that concerned about it as it is fairly rare.

I did wonder though if other users in here had needed to try the 32 bit thing..and how effective it may had been...or not.

I am more interested in why my right click wasn't producing wot the writer stated..though he didn't mention what OSX he was using..so guess maybe its just not standard.
