I woke my new BigAl from its overnight sleep this morning, and noticed something new... when it was first cycling back to wakefulness, the superdrive made a grinding noise, as though it were trying to mount a CD. I can't be positive, but I'm pretty sure it never did this before.

I disconnected everything from it and powered down, then restarted, and it will still doing the same thing. Odd.

It's not serious, it's just annoying to have what was previously a silent wake-up now be noisy. Anyone seen this happen before?

Have you tried putting a CD in? Put something unimportant in, because if your drive is having a problem, you might not be able to get it out. Either way, it shouldn't be making a noise when there's no disc inside.

Yeah, I put a CD in, and it mounted it fine. Ejected it and put it back to sleep, still made noise on wakeup.

The drive itself seems to be functioning fine. It just makes a quick mount/seek sound when the machine wakes up from sleep.
