I use my Drobo 5D purely for video editing, connected via Thunderbolt, using FCPX.

I currently have 3x3TB WD Red drives installed.
They have always run fine to date and I've had no issues.

However, i wonder if I would be better off using those drives in a new Synology NAS and purchasing faster 7200rpm drives for the Drobo?

Would this be beneficial at all? If so, are Seagate drives generally the best to go for?

I don't think you'll see any speed improvement in "upgrading" the Red drives to a faster flavor, i.e., black models. Personally, I'd use the red drives in a DAS as you have or a NAS. In both cases you want reliability.

Thanks - I was just looking at the Blacks as well! lol
