My wife dropped her iPhone 3GS (in a case) out of her purse. No physical damage to iPhone. It is jailbroken.
But doesn't get the 3G or E icon anymore and can only make phone calls, get text or use wi-fi.
Sounds like somehow the data radio was damaged but I have never heard of such a thing.
I have tried pulling out the SIM card, resetting Network settings and rebooting.
Is it hopeless?

Try a restore.
If still nothing bring it in for an exchange to Apple.
Since theres no physical damage they'd probably swap it for you.

Did a restore, still didn't work, then about 5 hours later it started working and hasn't failed since.
I knew I could take it back but this is a 3.1.2 iPhone with the old bootrom so I sure didn't want to lose it to a newer version.
Keeping my fingers crossed, if it fails again I will get the 4 since it will be less than a month old when the 4 hits the street.
